Activites that are featured throughout the game consist of constructing ships, training crewmen to fight against enemies, collecting resources to keep their port growing, forming fleets to battle enemy ships and underwater monsters (especially other players), upgrading ships to help defeat tougher enemies, or taking part in limited time events throughout the game. Presented in the style of an MMORTS game, the player selects a custom pirate captain who encounters Jack Sparrow and Joshamee Gibbs where they tell the player that the East India Trading Company is still invading the seas planning to defeat all pirates.
Developed by Korean-based company JOYCITY, the game was released on May 10, 2017, sixteen days before the theatrical release of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. Pirates of the Caribbean: Tides of War is a naval warfare game based on the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
